According to reports, the American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is laying off employees as the company is trying to reduce costs before launching a more affordable SUV next year. A company spokesperson stated that the number of layoffs is less than 1.5% of Rivian's total workforce. As of the end of last year, the company had about 15,000 employees. The Rivian spokesperson said, "As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of the R2 model's operations, we recently made adjustments to the commercial team." The spokesperson added that affected employees are eligible for rehire and encouraged to apply for other vacant positions. The layoffs for American and Canadian employees are effective immediately. American car manufacturers have been preparing for the expiration of the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit policy at the end of this month, with many companies planning to cut production.
