Barcelona, Spain will reduce its cruise ship terminals.
The Barcelona City Council and the port authority signed an agreement on the 17th to reduce the number of cruise ship docks in the city from 7 to 5 by 2030, and to upgrade and renovate the existing ports to deal with overtourism and improve the tourist experience. According to Agence France-Presse, under the agreement, Barcelona will dismantle three docks and build a new one. Once the new cruise ship dock is completed, it will be open to all tourists and can accommodate 7,000 people at the same time. In addition, the relevant departments will upgrade the power supply, extend bridges, and build public transportation corridors to facilitate the passage of cars, bicycles, and pedestrians. The port authority stated that these upgrades are expected to make Barcelona's port "one of the most modern and sustainable facilities in the world." Agence France-Presse reported that due to the reduction in the number of docks, the daily average number of tourists received at the Barcelona cruise ship port will decrease from 37,000 to 31,000.
