In our country, the weight of passenger cars has increased by nearly 400 kilograms in 12 years. Our country's new energy vehicles need to lose weight.
Data shows that by 2024, the average curb weight of passenger cars in China will reach 1704 kilograms, which is nearly 400 kilograms heavier than in 2012. In addition, around the year 2000, the common width of household new energy vehicles in the market was around 1.7 meters. By 2015, the width had increased to 1.8 meters. This week, household cars weighing close to 2 tons have sparked discussions due to their increase in size and weight. Car engineers suggest that for every 10 millimeters increase in width of a new energy vehicle, approximately 0.8 kWh of battery capacity can be added. However, experts point out that the increase in vehicle weight is not solely due to this factor. Some car companies are marketing their vehicles based on extended range, claiming that their cars can cover 800 to 1000 kilometers on a single charge. In reality, this requires installing a large battery pack, which can weigh up to 700-800 kilograms. Some car companies even include features like toilets in their cars to make their products stand out in the market. On January 1st of this year, a mandatory national standard for electric vehicles was implemented. Any new vehicle model that does not meet the energy consumption standards will not be approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and they will not be able to be produced, sold, or registered. This measure is aimed at curbing the trend of electric vehicles becoming increasingly overweight. In the future, new energy vehicles may have the opportunity to return to a standard size.
