Ministry of Commerce spokesperson responds to US exemption of "equivalent tariffs" on certain products
Reporter: The US recently announced the exemption of "equivalent tariffs" on certain products. What is China's response to this?
On April 12, Eastern Time, the US announced a memorandum exempting certain products such as computers, smartphones, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and integrated circuits from "equivalent tariffs." China is currently evaluating the impact of this exemption.
We noticed that this is the second adjustment made by the US regarding related policies since temporarily postponing the imposition of high "equivalent tariffs" on some trading partners on April 10. It could be said that this is a small step by the US in correcting its unilateral practice of "equivalent tariffs."
Issuing so-called "equivalent tariffs" through a presidential executive order not only goes against basic economic laws and market rules but also ignores the complementary cooperation and supply-demand relationships between countries. Since the introduction of "equivalent tariffs" on April 2, it has not solved any problems for the US itself but instead seriously disrupted the international economic and trade order, severely interfered with the normal production and operation of enterprises, and the consumption of people's daily lives, harming others without benefiting oneself.
China's position on China-US economic and trade relations has always been consistent. There are no winners in a trade war, and protectionism is a dead end. As an old Chinese saying goes, "One who ties the bell should be the one to untie it." We urge the US to listen to rational voices from the international community and domestic sectors, take a big step in correcting mistakes, completely eliminate the erroneous practice of "equivalent tariffs," and return to the correct path of mutual respect and resolving differences through equal dialogue.
