French President Macron on Thursday urged European companies to suspend their investments in the United States in response to President Trump's decision to impose tariffs on the EU and other regions.
In a meeting with industry representatives affected by the tariffs, Macron said it was unreasonable for European companies to continue investing billions of dollars in the U.S. while facing trade pressure from America.
"What signal does it send when, while they are attacking us, European large companies are still pouring huge sums into the American economy?" Macron emphasized. "We must show collective unity."
Trump announced on Wednesday at the White House that he would impose a 20% tariff on imported goods from the EU, which will take effect on April 9. He once again accused the 27 EU member countries of "taking advantage of the U.S.," even calling their behavior "pitiful."
Macron later met with several European business executives affected by the tariffs, including Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, Safran Group CEO Olivier Andries, and Pernod Ricard CEO Alexandre Ricard.
French government spokesperson Sophie Primas earlier on Thursday stated that Paris is pushing for the EU to retaliate against U.S. technology companies and is looking to expand retaliatory measures to the service industry.
Macron also stressed that the EU should not be "too weak" in dealing with the U.S. tariff issue. He mentioned that the EU could use counter-coercion tools and consider countermeasures against American digital service companies and their financing mechanisms.
