Under heavy pressure from American tariffs, Japan's Shinkansen hopes to expand into India five years later.
According to CCTV, on August 31, Japan and India confirmed that India's first high-speed rail project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail, will introduce the "E10 series" Shinkansen train. The train is currently under development by East Japan Railway Company and is expected to start operating in India in 2030. Both sides also announced that they will initiate training for drivers and related personnel in preparation for the formal operation in the future. Prior to this, Indian Prime Minister Modi completed a visit to Japan. During the visit, both sides decided to cooperate in various economic and trade fields such as semiconductors, critical minerals, and high-speed rail. Japan has promised to invest approximately $68 billion in India over the next 10 years. In addition, the cooperation between the two sides also mentioned that Japan will introduce 50,000 Indian technical professionals to work in Japan, alleviating the shortage of domestic labor force. In recent years, the trade volume between Japan and India has been continuously increasing, and direct investment has significantly increased. By 2024, the bilateral trade volume reached $25.2 billion. However, while Japan and India are stepping up economic and trade cooperation, both countries are facing tariff pressures from the Trump administration in the United States.
