The EU reiterates its right to set digital rules and rejects US accusations.
After President Trump threatened to impose tariffs in retaliation against foreign digital regulation measures, the European Union stated on the 26th that the EU and its member states have the sovereign right to establish rules for economic activities within their own territories. The Chief Spokesperson of the European Commission, Paula Pinho, said at a press conference that "regulating economic activities within their own territories is the sovereign right of the European Union and its member states." This issue is not part of the framework agreement of the EU-US trade agreement, "the two are completely different issues." Trump warned all countries implementing digital taxes, digital legislation, digital rules, or digital regulations on the social media platform "TrueSocial" on the 26th, stating that unless these countries repeal discriminatory measures against American companies, they will impose high additional tariffs on their exports to the United States. Thomas Reinier, spokesperson for technology affairs at the European Commission, stated that the scope of EU digital rules is broad and not specifically targeting American companies.
