The Trump administration outlined plans to impose a 50% tariff on Indian products in a draft announcement released on Monday, marking the latest signal from the White House's efforts to increase tariffs. The notice issued by the Department of Homeland Security stated that the increased tariffs will apply to Indian products entering the consumer market after 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on August 27, 2025, or later, or products withdrawn from warehouses. Earlier this month, US President Trump announced plans to double the tariffs on Indian purchases of Russian oil from 25% to 50%. The Indian government condemned the so-called second-tier tariffs as unfair and expressed hopes for a breakthrough in peaceful negotiations to eliminate the necessity of imposing tariffs.
