According to reports, American citizens can now donate to the Treasury Department to help pay off the national debt through Venmo and PayPal. In the past 29 years, Americans have donated a total of $67.3 million, but it has had almost no substantive impact on the current national debt of $36.7 trillion. A screenshot posted on X by an NPR reporter on Wednesday shows a page on the Treasury Department's official website where donations can be made to the national debt project via Venmo and PayPal. According to Axios, the maximum amount that can be donated through Venmo is $999,999.99 per transaction, meaning that even with this amount, a donation would need to be made every 18 seconds to keep up with the pace of the national debt growth. It is currently unclear when the option to donate through Venmo and PayPal was added to the website.
