AMD CEO: Chips produced in TSMC's US factory cost 5% to 20% more.
AMD CEO Lisa Su said that the company's chips from TSMC's Arizona factory have higher costs. Su said at an AI event in Washington on Wednesday that compared to similar parts produced in Taiwan, the cost of American chips will be "over 5%, but not more than 20%". Su said that AMD expects to obtain the first batch of chips produced at TSMC's Arizona factory by the end of the year. Su said in an interview after the speech that the additional expense is worth it because the company is diversifying its critical chip supply. This will make the industry less susceptible to the kind of disruptions seen during the pandemic.
