Microsoft launches "AI Student Simulator"

Microsoft Research recently released a research system called StudentSim, attempting to solve a key challenge in the development of AI tutoring tools: how to determine whether a piece of explanation, hint, or question truly helps students improve without large-scale human experiments. Traditional AI tutors often only look at "whether the answer is correct," but teaching effectiveness also depends on whether students understand, whether they can correct errors, and whether different students need different types of answer support. Real learner studies can answer these questions, but they are time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to scale, making it hard to support rapid model iteration. To address this, Microsoft launched the StudentSim system, which trains a personalized "AI student simulator" for each student based on public, de-identified learner records. It simulates not only how students answer independently, but also how their responses change after receiving tutor explanations.
