The Italian Foreign Minister announced the cancellation of the visit to the United States.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on June 19th local time that he has canceled his planned visit to the United States next week. The reason is that President Trump made "serious" and "offensive" remarks about Italian Prime Minister Meloni, stating that "we cannot tolerate anyone offending Italy like the US President." According to Italian media reports earlier that day, President Trump claimed in a phone interview that during the recent G7 summit, Italian Prime Minister Meloni "begged" to take a photo with him, and he only agreed out of pity for her. The Italian government strongly criticized this statement. Meloni herself posted a video on social media platforms, stating that Trump's remarks were "completely fabricated" and that "Italy and I have never begged."
