After a raid by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the head of the Los Angeles school district has been suspended.
On Friday, the Los Angeles Unified School District placed Superintendent Alberto Carvalho on paid administrative leave. Two days earlier, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his home and office, causing turmoil in the second largest school district in the United States. After consecutive emergency closed-door meetings this week, the school board announced this decision without further explanation. Carvalho has not been charged with any wrongdoing at this time, but concerns have been growing in recent days about the stability of the district and its approximately 400,000 enrolled students. Senior district executive and former school operations director Andres Chvez will temporarily assume Carvalho's duties, a decision that was approved unanimously. The specific target of the investigation is not yet clear, but multiple sources suggest it is related to a two-year-long criminal investigation into the troubled tech startup AllHere. The company had received a $6 million contract from the Los Angeles school district to develop AI chatbots before closing down due to fraud allegations.
