The United States waives the $11 million fine imposed on Southwest Airlines for the operational collapse during the 2022 holiday season.
The Trump administration announced on Saturday that it will waive a $11 million fine against Southwest Airlines. The fine is part of a $140 million settlement agreement stemming from operational breakdowns that occurred during the busy holiday travel season in December 2022. In December 2023, Southwest Airlines agreed to pay a $35 million cash fine and provide a total of $90 million in travel vouchers, with each voucher not less than $75, over three years. These vouchers will be given to passengers whose flights were canceled due to Southwest Airlines' own issues, resulting in a delay of at least 3 hours in their final journey. The operational breakdown event had stranded over 2 million passengers. The U.S. Department of Transportation stated in a written order that the reason for waiving the remaining $11 million fine is that Southwest Airlines has decided to invest over $1 billion in operations since the 2022 operational breakdown event.
