Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng pointed out that the United States imposed a so-called 145% tariff on Hong Kong with zero tariffs, which is full of fallacious arguments and illogical. The Hong Kong SAR government has repeatedly expressed strong dissatisfaction and urged the US to stop undermining free trade.
The Hong Kong government held a special symposium at the government headquarters today (April 17) on the issue of the United States' irrational imposition of tariffs. About 100 Hong Kong National People's Congress deputies and members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference attended the meeting to exchange views on how to deal with the risks brought about by the bully and barbaric behavior of the United States, and to unite various sectors to analyze and grasp the opportunities of the new international trade order. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, John Lee Ka-chiu, stated at the meeting that the recent imposition of so-called "equal tariffs" by the United States on multiple countries and regions seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization and wantonly disrupts the international trade order. The Hong Kong government is fully leading and promoting social unity and cooperation, strengthening regional trade cooperation, deepening international exchanges and cooperation, exploring emerging markets, and promoting the sustainable development of Hong Kong. John Lee Ka-chiu pointed out that the United States has unjustly imposed a so-called 145% tariff on tariff-free Hong Kong, full of fallacies and illogical reasoning. The SAR government has repeatedly expressed strong dissatisfaction and urged the US to stop undermining free trade. The opinions reflected at the symposium showed that the United States government's bullying and irrational imposition of tariffs is a disruption to the global trade order and a serious blow to the global supply chain that countries have collectively worked to establish over the past few decades. Hong Kong will not bow down and will remain steadfast in turning challenges into opportunities. In the process of global trade relations and supply chain restructuring, Hong Kong must remain confident, fight shoulder to shoulder with the country, seize the changing new order, explore new trade frontiers, safeguard economic security, and promote economic upgrading and transformation.
