A senior official in Mexico said on Tuesday that the Mexican government will propose a bill to impose import tariffs on some industries, including automobiles and manufacturing, to address trade imbalances; this move will also bring an additional 700 billion pesos in revenue to the treasury. Carlos Lerma, Deputy Minister of Taxation, said at a press conference held after the release of the 2026 budget proposal that the Ministry of Economy will submit a bill to Congress focusing on addressing trade imbalances in certain industries. Lerma did not provide specifics on how the tariffs would be adjusted. Lerma added, "It should be emphasized that all of this will be done within the framework of international treaties."
