The World Organisation for Animal Health, headquartered in Paris, reported on the 3rd that farms in Germany and Portugal had separately reported outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 to the organization that day. Over 250,000 poultry have been culled due to the outbreak. According to the report, on September 1, a farm in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, experienced an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, affecting 2,800 laying hens, with 100 infected birds dying and the rest culled.
