The French National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) issued a statement on September 3 stating that it has imposed a fine of 325 million euros (approximately 381 million US dollars) on Google for improperly displaying ads to Gmail users without their consent and using cookies. A Google spokesperson responded to this by saying that users have always been able to control the ads they see in the company's products, and that Google is evaluating CNIL's penalty. The spokesperson stated, "Over the past two years, we have made further improvements to address the issues CNIL is concerned about, including adding a one-click option to reject personalized ads when creating a Google account and adjusting how ads are displayed in Gmail."
