Today, the special prosecution team investigating the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol, Kim Geon-hee, has filed charges against her. Kim Geon-hee has become the first former first lady to be charged while in detention in South Korea's constitutional history. The special prosecution team has pointed out that Kim Geon-hee is suspected of accepting requests from a religious group from April to August 2022, violating the Specific Crimes Aggravated Punishment Act. Additionally, she is also suspected of receiving dozens of free public opinion surveys provided by political broker Myung Tae-kyun during the 2022 presidential election, exerting influence to get former People Power Party member Kim Yeong-su elected in the by-elections that year, thereby violating the Political Funds Act. She is also accused of violating the Capital Markets Act by manipulating the stock price of German cars from 2009 to 2012. The Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for Kim Geon-hee on August 12, and the special prosecution team questioned her five times afterwards, but she mostly remained silent, choosing not to answer the team's questions. Her detention period is set to expire on the 31st of this month.
