On August 28, local time, Federal Chief District Judge Chapman of Tennessee ruled that three former Memphis police officers convicted in 2024 for the fatal beating of African American man Terrell Nichols will receive a new trial. The judge pointed out that although there was no actual bias found in the original trial, the judge's comments after the case about "gang infiltration at the higher levels of the Memphis Police Department" constituted a risk to judicial impartiality. The related judge recused himself from the case in June this year. On January 7, 2023, Nichols was beaten and arrested by police in Memphis after being pulled over while driving, and died three days later. The release of the video of the incident sparked protests across the United States.
