Appointment of a senior commissioner after many months, Canada's relationship with India is easing.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced on August 28th local time the appointment of Christopher Cootes as the new High Commissioner to India. On the same day, India appointed Dinesh K. Patnaik as the new High Commissioner to Canada. An announcement from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "These appointments are an important step towards restoring necessary diplomatic services for citizens and businesses of both countries." Last fall, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police accused the Indian government of involvement in violent events within Canada, including murder and extortion, leading to the expulsion of diplomats from both countries and sparking a tense diplomatic dispute.
