The new generation of trains by Amtrak, the "Next Generation Acela" project, is set to begin operations on Thursday on the Northeast Corridor connecting Washington DC, New York, and Boston. The project, costing $2.35 billion, has been delayed for years due to the complexity of testing, infrastructure limitations, and other disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amtrak says the new generation train can reach speeds of up to 160 miles per hour, 10 miles per hour faster than the current Acela trains. The trains are also lighter and larger, with a 27% increase in seating capacity. However, Amtrak's new generation trains still lag far behind other high-speed trains in the world, with bullet trains in Asia and Europe often exceeding speeds of 200 miles per hour. These 28 trains will be phased in by 2027.
