Germany approves the establishment of a National Security Council.
On August 27th, local time, the German Federal Government approved the establishment of a National Security Council at a cabinet meeting. The council will be led by the German Chancellor and will consist of 9 ministers, including the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Defense. Initially, there will be 13 positions under the council, which will coordinate with various federal ministries, security agencies, states, and external experts. According to information on the German government website, the National Security Council will have three main tasks: 1. Integrating and organizing information from various government departments, based on a comprehensive assessment of the national security situation, to prepare for political decision-making; 2. Conducting strategic foresight planning to identify medium to long-term threats and develop corresponding contingency plans, including continuous revisions to the "National Security Strategy"; 3. Organizing crisis simulations and security policy exercises. Chancellor Merkel stated in a press conference after the cabinet meeting that the establishment of the National Security Council had been debated for 30 years. The council will become the core platform for the German government to address cross-sectoral national security issues, coordinating internal, external, economic, and digital security, providing references and recommendations for security decision-making by the German government.
