The Consulate General of China in Christchurch issues a consular reminder: Fishing in accordance with the law.

Recently, a Chinese citizen in our jurisdiction was fishing in the outskirts without legally purchasing a fishing license and submitted a altered old fishing license when inspected, facing multiple criminal charges and high fines. In light of this, our consulate solemnly reminds the following: 1. Relevant legal provisions. According to the New Zealand Fisheries Act and Freshwater Fishing Regulations, fishing in freshwater areas within New Zealand requires purchasing and carrying at all times a valid fishing license issued by Fish & Game New Zealand. Fishing licenses are personalized and must not be lent, forged, or altered. In addition, each fishing area has specific regulations regarding the species, size, catch limit, and open season of fish. 2. Serious consequences of breaking the law. According to relevant laws and regulations, fishing without a license, forging or altering a fishing license, etc., are all illegal behaviors that may result in high fines, confiscation of fishing gear and catch, and in severe cases, criminal liability. Illegal records may also have negative impacts on personal visas, study, work, and future entry into New Zealand. 3. Fishing enthusiasts are advised to visit the Fish & Game New Zealand official website in advance, keep abreast of the latest requirements for fishing permits in the area they plan to visit, and strictly adhere to them. Compliance with New Zealand laws and regulations not only affects personal interests but also the overall image of Chinese citizens visiting New Zealand. We urge our fellow compatriots to raise their legal awareness and avoid crossing the "red line" of the law.
