National Standard for Design Guidelines for Elderly Furniture Released
Reporters learned from the State Administration for Market Regulation on August 25 that the State Administration for Market Regulation recently approved the release of the National Standard "Guidelines for Designing Elderly Furniture", which will officially be implemented on February 1, 2026. This standard is based on the actual needs and physiological and psychological characteristics of the elderly, proposing detailed design requirements for the appearance, materials, intelligence, and functional configuration of elderly furniture, aiming to enhance the compatibility of furniture products with the needs of the elderly. The standard specifies that potential risks should be considered when designing the appearance and materials of the furniture. The main color should be light beige or other soft neutral colors, and the auxiliary colors should be light yellow or other low-saturation warm colors. They should form a moderate contrast with the colors of the walls and floors, so that the elderly can clearly identify edges and reduce the occurrence of collisions. It encourages the use of natural and environmentally friendly materials, avoiding materials with strong odors or that can easily cause allergies. For items like sofas and soft furnishings, high flame retardant materials should be preferred. The height and angle of the products should be designed to be adjustable, exposed parts should be smooth, the overall structure should be stable, armrests should have anti-slip properties, and parts like seat cushions that are prone to dirt should be easy to replace and clean.
