Google users are requesting a federal jury to award them $290 billion in compensation to address accusations that the search giant continued to collect personal data without consent after turning off privacy settings. This compensation request was made during opening statements in a class-action trial that began on Tuesday in San Francisco, and the amount would far surpass other significant privacy cases against Google, including a $14 billion settlement reached earlier this year with the Texas Attorney General over state privacy violations. The massive compensation amount was calculated based on the number of users involved in the class-action lawsuit and the duration of the alleged infringement. The class-action lawsuit represents nearly 100 million Google users. David Boies, a lawyer representing the class, from Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, told the eight-member jury in his opening statement on Tuesday that the group claims Google illegally collected their data over an eight-year period after they disabled tracking features in their account settings.
