U.S. Secretary of State: Russia and Ukraine must make concessions to reach a peace agreement.
On August 17th local time, US Secretary of State Pompeo stated that the US will make every effort to push Russia and Ukraine to reach an agreement, but both sides must make concessions. He also mentioned that some of the topics discussed in the meeting between Trump and Putin could be a breakthrough in ending the conflict in Ukraine. Pompeo said on a US broadcast program that progress was made in the meeting between US President Trump and Russian President Putin in Alaska, discovering potential areas of consensus that could push forward discussions with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders. However, he emphasized that there is still a long way to go to truly achieve a ceasefire or a peace agreement. Pompeo stated that the US will not give up on pushing for negotiations, but achieving peace will require patience and long-term efforts. He also stressed that any agreement must involve Ukraine, and the essence of negotiations is for both sides to make concessions; for the conflict to end, both Russia and Ukraine must accept reality: neither side can get everything they want.
