Chinese People's Insurance Property and Casualty Company's former chairman of the board of supervisors, Zhang Xiaoli, is on trial.
According to the Shandong High Court, on August 12, the Dongying Intermediate People's Court publicly held a trial of Zhang Xiaoli, former member of the Party Committee and chairman of the Supervisory Board of the People's Insurance Group of China, on charges of bribery. The Dongying People's Procuratorate accused Zhang Xiaoli of using his positions as Secretary-General of the Board/Office of the Supervisory Board of PICC, member of the Party Committee, Vice President, and senior expert, from July 2009 to September 2024, to seek benefits for related units and individuals in contracting insurance business, fund disbursement, personnel recruitment, and job adjustments, illegally accepting over 9.9 million yuan in bribes through direct or indirect actions facilitated by his power and status. During the trial, the procuratorial organs presented relevant evidence, the defendant Zhang Xiaoli and his defense counsel cross-examined the evidence, and both sides expressed their opinions in court. Zhang Xiaoli made a final statement, expressing remorse and pleading guilty. The court announced a recess at the end of the trial and will schedule a sentencing date. Over ten members of the National People's Congress, CPPCC members, and members of the public attended the trial as observers.
