The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the termination of 22 contracts related to mRNA vaccines, totaling nearly $500 million. This move signifies a major shift in vaccine policy direction under the leadership of Secretary Robert F. Kennedy. According to a statement released on Tuesday, the termination of these contracts will cover multiple projects involving vaccine manufacturers such as Moderna, Pfizer, Sanofi, and AstraZeneca, as well as research institutions like Emory University. Kennedy pointed out that these mRNA vaccine projects "have not been effective in protecting against upper respiratory infections such as COVID and the flu." HHS is redirecting funding towards other vaccine projects.
