In order to stimulate economic growth, the New Zealand government will begin charging visitors to popular tourist attractions such as the Milford Track and Cook Peak a maximum of 40 New Zealand dollars. Prime Minister Lucasen stated in a speech on Saturday that New Zealand's pristine national parks and beautiful trails are "of extraordinary significance to New Zealanders" and that foreign tourists should pay for access to high-traffic attractions. It is estimated that this could generate 62 million New Zealand dollars in revenue annually, which will be reinvested into the maintenance and improvement of these attractions.
