Trump Writes to Global 17 Big Pharma Giants Urging Them to Significantly Reduce US Drug Prices
President Trump sent a letter to the 17 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, including Gilead, Novo Nordisk, and Pfizer, urging them to reduce the prices of new drugs in the United States to the lowest levels paid by other specific countries. Trump asked each company to immediately lower the prices of existing drugs charged to healthcare programs and ensure that future drug prices are comparable to those overseas. He stated that the U.S. government will work with them to ensure that any price increases overseas are consistent with domestic prices. Any profits gained by companies from price increases in Europe and other regions must be returned to the United States to lower costs domestically. Trump also requested that pharmaceutical companies establish direct-to-consumer purchasing mechanisms for high-volume drugs, allowing consumers to purchase drugs directly at discounted prices obtained through third-party insurance companies.
