Angola taxi strike begins, passengers of mini buses are stranded.
Due to the rising cost of fuel, small bus drivers in Angola have started a three-day strike, causing passengers to be stranded in the capital city of Luanda, an African oil-producing country. Videos on social media show long lines of commuters on Monday after informal small buses suspended services. These blue and white mini buses are an important means of transportation for Luanda residents as the city lacks a reliable public transportation system. The increase in fuel prices is due to the gradual elimination of fuel subsidies by the Angolan government, aimed at reducing expenses. According to data from the International Monetary Fund, Angola's fuel subsidy expenditure was about $3 billion last year, equivalent to the total expenditure in the health and education sectors of the country.
