Trump is considering using tariff revenue to issue tax refund checks or repay national debt.
Trump said he is considering using some of the revenue generated from tariffs imposed on trading partners to distribute tax rebate checks to American citizens. "We are indeed looking into that. We have a lot of money coming in right now, and we are considering giving a little bit of a tax refund," Trump told reporters on Friday before departing for Scotland from the White House. "Giving a tax refund to people below a certain income level may be very good." He also mentioned the possibility of using this revenue to pay off U.S. national debt. "The big thing we want to do is reduce debt, but we are also considering tax refunds." As of this fiscal year, the U.S. has received over $100 billion in revenue from tariffs for the first time. According to the monthly budget report released by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the U.S. collected $27 billion in revenue from customs duties in June, bringing the total tariff revenue for the fiscal year to $113 billion.
