New Zealand Prime Minister: China is an indispensable important force for the economic development of New Zealand.
On the 18th local time, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon stated that China is an indispensable important force in the development of the New Zealand economy, and is an important partner for New Zealand to achieve growth, enhance resilience, and create opportunities. Luxon said at the 2025 China Business Summit that China's position and actions are indeed crucial. As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the world's second largest economy, and a key global partner, China's influence cannot be ignored. Therefore, it is very important for both sides to continue exchanging and deepening their understanding in key areas. The Chinese market continues to create opportunities for New Zealand businesses, exporters, and innovators. Significant progress has been made by both sides, and now is a critical moment to continue to build on this momentum, expand into more Chinese cities, and reach more Chinese consumers. New Zealand will continue to closely cooperate with China, further consolidate and expand this solid and growing relationship, so that both countries can benefit from it. Luxon said that as of March 2025, the bilateral trade volume between China and New Zealand has exceeded NZ$39 billion, accounting for over 20% of New Zealand's total exports. During his visit to China this year, agreements worth over NZ$1 billion were signed in multiple areas. Luxon emphasized that China is New Zealand's largest trading partner, while New Zealand accounts for only 0.25% of China's economy. He hopes to increase this to 0.33% in the future, which may seem small but represents a potential 32% growth in exports for New Zealand.
