Trump says Coca-Cola has agreed to produce Coke using sugar in the US. Coca-Cola responds.
According to reports from the American news website Axios and the British Broadcasting Corporation, U.S. President Trump stated on the 16th local time that Coca-Cola has agreed to produce Coke in the United States using real cane sugar. Trump wrote on his social media platform on the 16th that he has been communicating with Coca-Cola, headquartered in Atlanta, about using cane sugar, which has already been used in the Mexican version of Coke. "I want to thank all the executives at Coca-Cola. This will be a very right step for them - you will see, this is better!" he wrote.
The report mentioned that Coca-Cola currently uses corn syrup in its products in the United States. It is not yet clear whether the company plans to modify its existing formula or launch new products.
In a statement to Axios, the company said, "We appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic brand Coca-Cola. We will soon share more details about innovative products in the Coca-Cola product series."
It is worth mentioning that several foreign media outlets previously reported that Trump is a fervent fan of Diet Coke and has installed a "Coke button" in the Oval Office of the White House to remind staff to bring him chilled Diet Coke when needed.
The American newspaper Wall Street Journal added that John Bode, president of the Corn Refiners Association, stated on Wednesday, "Replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar makes no sense." He said that doing so would result in job losses in the U.S. food manufacturing industry and harm farm incomes. Some food scientists have pointed out that these two sweeteners have subtle differences in flavor: high-fructose corn syrup peaks in sweetness earlier, enhancing the flavors of fruit and spices, while cane sugar's sweetness is more versatile and lasts longer.
