Chinese and American foreign ministers hold meeting in Kuala Lumpur: Agree to strengthen communication and dialogue, explore expanding cooperation areas.
On July 11th, during the annual series of East Asia Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met with US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. Analysts believe that the meeting between Wang Yi and Pompeo in Malaysia provided them with an opportunity to engage in neutral ground, possibly paving the way for more normalized communication between the two countries and preparing for a possible visit by US President Trump to Beijing. In a phone call between the leaders of China and the United States in June, Chinese leaders welcomed Trump's return visit to China. According to Bloomberg, the US government has been contacting corporate executives to see if they are interested in accompanying Trump on his possible visit to China this year. In addition, the media quoted Klaus Larres, professor of history and international affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as saying that apart from a possible visit to Beijing in early September, Trump also seems to be considering meeting with Chinese leaders during this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. Reports state that the leaders of the two countries have often held meetings using the APEC platform. This year's APEC meeting will be held in South Korea from late October to early November.
