Energy developer Grantham said on Tuesday that 50 companies have expressed formal interest in a contract worth over $115 billion for its Alaska liquefied natural gas project, a large infrastructure deal advocated by U.S. President Trump. The ambitious proposal to transport natural gas from the northernmost part of Alaska to the Alaska Bay through an 800-mile pipeline has been discussed for decades. However, while threatening to impose trade tariffs, Trump is also pushing allies such as Japan and South Korea to purchase American energy. In a news release issued on Tuesday, Grantham said that its department responsible for the project has completed the selection process for the first round of strategic partners, with interest from companies in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, India, and the European Union. Sources said that JERA, a top Japanese utility company, is one of several Japanese companies interested, but given the high cost of the project, Japan still maintains a cautious stance on firm support for the project.
