The rapid development of data centers connected to the largest electricity grid in the United States has led to a cost increase of $9.4 billion, from Illinois to Washington D.C. Starting this month, this expense will be reflected in their electricity bills. A report released on June 3 by Monitoring Analytics, an independent market monitoring organization for the U.S. electricity grid, shows that overall costs have increased by 180% in the PJM Interconnection capacity market serving customers from Illinois to Washington D.C. The increasing energy demand from data centers is cited as the main reason for the tight supply and high prices. Analysis by the PJM regulatory agency suggests that households and businesses are subsidizing some of the world's wealthiest technology companies that are building data centers.
