Apple has challenged the European Union's order to open up its closed ecosystem to competitors such as Meta, Google's parent company Alphabet, calling the requirement unreasonable and a hindrance to innovation. In March, the European Commission detailed how Apple must comply with the Digital Markets Act aimed at regulating large tech giants. Apple stated that the EU's interoperability requirements would establish "an unreasonable, costly, and innovation-stifling process". "These requirements will also pose significant privacy and security risks to companies that need to provide sensitive information to EU users," the company said in a statement. "These rules, which exist only for Apple and not other companies, have serious flaws that will greatly restrict our ability to introduce innovative products and features in Europe, resulting in European users receiving a subpar experience." Companies like Meta, Google, Spotify, and Garmin have all requested access to Apple user data. This legal battle could last for years, during which Apple will still have to comply with EU orders.
