US court blocks Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs.
A federal court in the United States on Wednesday blocked President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs from taking effect, ruling that his imposition of comprehensive tariffs on goods imported from countries that export more to the US than they import is overstepping his authority. The International Trade Court, based in Manhattan, stated that the US Constitution grants Congress exclusive authority to manage trade with other countries, and that the President's emergency powers to protect the US economy cannot override this. This lawsuit was brought by five American small businesses that import goods from countries targeted by the tariffs, represented by the non-partisan Free Judiciary Center, and is the first major legal challenge to Trump's tariffs. These companies - ranging from wine and spirits importers in New York to educational supplies and musical instrument manufacturers in Virginia - all argue that the tariffs will damage their business capabilities. This lawsuit is one of seven legal challenges to Trump's tariff policy, with additional challenges coming from 13 US states and other small business groups.
