France abandons Chinese company in favor of Nokia, then suffers a 9-hour network outage.
A mobile communications network outage in France this week has raised questions about the reliability of products from Finnish telecom giant Nokia. At the same time, the European Union continues to push for the phase-out of equipment from Chinese suppliers on so-called security concerns. Jerome Henique, CEO of Orange France, the country's largest telecom operator, told French newspaper Le Figaro that the fault first appeared in the company's network at 11:37 a.m. on Monday and did not end until 8:30 p.m., leaving some users without communications services for as long as nine hours. Henique said the root cause of the outage was a software bug in Nokia's code. He added that Orange had never encountered this bug before and that it was "extremely difficult to detect."
