On October 24, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across France. The rallies and marches in various places were initially peaceful overall, but as night fell, clashes broke out again in Paris, Marseille, and other cities. France's Interior Ministry said about 410,000 people nationwide joined the protests. But unions said the actual number was about twice the official figure. Among them, the march in Paris was the largest, with about 110,000 participants. As the rally ended, the situation on the ground took a sharp turn for the worse. Hundreds of masked individuals threw stones at police and tried to set up barricades, and riot police fired tear gas and deployed water cannon to disperse the crowd. Some shops were smashed and looted. Clashes also occurred in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble, and other places, where protesters set fire to trash bins and containers, and shops and supermarkets, including jewelry stores, were looted. In Clermont-Ferrand, Lille, Nantes, Nice, Strasbourg, and other places, police fired multiple rounds of tear gas at demonstrators. French Interior Minister Nunez said that in almost every march there were "high-risk groups that broke away from the procession and deliberately carried out violence." As of 7:30 p.m. local time, nearly 1,000 people had been detained. Although the French government deployed 70,000 police and gendarmes, and Paris and other places imposed partial curfews and bans on gatherings to strictly prevent a repeat of last weekend's unrest, it still could not be fully avoided.
