Facing the AI impact, there is no need for excessive anxiety.
Yesterday, the Yau Mathematical and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance was established at Tsinghua University. It will launch research in areas such as the development of specialized large models for mathematical science, AI-assisted mathematical formal proof and conjecture discovery, explainable artificial intelligence, and intelligent computing in interdisciplinary fields, promoting the deep integration of AI and mathematics. As mathematicians have said, in the face of AI's impact, we need not be overly anxious. "Machine creativity cannot compare with humans. Humans have joys, sorrows, and emotions, and possess the most cutting-edge creative ability. Artificial intelligence does not understand how to pioneer the frontiers of mathematics, so there is no need to fear it," said Yau. AI can generate massive numbers of proofs, yet it cannot pose truly insightful new questions like human mathematicians, still less can it possess the mathematical intuition that humans accumulate through long-term researcha unique ability that blends experience, aesthetics, and creativity, and remains the irreplaceable core advantage of human researchers.
