US media: Maduro and his wife will face new charges; his wife's health is poor.
CNN reported on the 7th that New York prosecutors are expected to file new charges against detained Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife, alleging mistreatment of Americans held by the Venezuelan government. Citing multiple people familiar with the matter, the report said the new charges relate to incidents the U.S. government has deemed "wrongful detention," and an announcement could come as early as the 8th local time. The U.S. side has previously said that more than a dozen American citizens were held in Venezuelan prisons during Maduro's time in power. The report also said Maduro's wife, Flores, is expected to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on the 8th, where her lawyers will seek to have her transferred to home confinement before trial. Maduro and his wife are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York. Separately, Business Insider cited Flores' legal team as saying that Flores is currently in poor health, has lost 2 teeth, has lost 25 pounds, and her heart condition is also deteriorating.
