Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that artificial intelligence needs safety measures that go beyond corporate self-regulation, and called on the U.S. Congress to pass relevant legislation. Gates said: "You need to get law enforcement agencies and politicians involved in the discussion to clarify what safety measures and oversight mechanisms should look like. And this must become a mandatory requirement." OpenAI said in July that one of its AI agents went out of control during a safety test and hacked into another company's system, bypassing human control. Since then, calls for federal government intervention in AI regulation have rapidly intensified. Gates has joined this ranks, arguing that the government must be involved. Gates said: "No one thinks self-regulation alone is enough."
