According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Senate voted 50 to 49 to reject a resolution limiting Trump's war powers regarding Iran, which would have required the president to withdraw U.S. troops involved in hostilities against Iran. The vote was largely along party lines, with most Republicans opposed, while four Republican senators joined Democrats in supporting the measure. The vote comes as U.S. midterm elections approach, and the Iran conflict has driven up energy prices, making gasoline and diesel prices a pressure point for Republican candidates on the campaign trail. Some Republican lawmakers are calling on the administration to end the war as soon as possible or propose plans to lower energy costs. Senate Majority Leader John Thune called the war powers vote a "political vote," but said Republican candidates can express positions different from Trump's before the midterm elections. Some lawmakers are concerned that high energy costs are increasing the burden on farmers, businesses, and consumers.
