As the market grows increasingly concerned about privacy issues with AI devices, Meta Platforms (META.O) is expected to unveil new smart glasses at its annual Connect conference on Wednesday, including a model that does not come with a camera. Last year, smart glasses jointly developed by Meta and EssilorLuxottica saw a sharp increase in sales, surpassing 7 million units, giving Meta a dominant position in the market. But as these devices become more popular, concerns have arisen worldwide about their ability to record others without their knowledge, and several restaurants, bars, and cinemas in the UK have restricted their use. The glasses also face litigation, including a proposed class action in California alleging that Meta misled users over privacy protections and claiming that human annotators training its AI viewed and labeled people's private moments, such as changing clothes, after footage was uploaded to servers. Meta denies the allegations and plans to fight them. The company is expected to launch two camera-free smart glasses, featuring the Clubmaster and Burbank designs.
