Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser said that as AI models become increasingly capable, companies are accelerating the construction of defense systems to address the risk of potentially increased cyberattacks. "Right now every company around the world is doing a lot of patching, and it's a defense race," Fraser said at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York. Fraser said that earlier this year, the launch of Anthropic's Mythos model drew attention to a new generation of AI cyber risks, after which U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and then-Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell convened Wall Street executives to discuss the risks posed by the model and urged companies to strengthen their system defenses. Recently, AI systems including those from Google and Anthropic have been found in testing to intrude into corporate systems, further raising security concerns. Fraser said the bottleneck in AI development has shifted from chips to energy supply, with global demand for energy rising sharply. Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Qatar is working with AI companies on responsible investment, and that safety safeguards around the technology are still being refined.
