Sony and TSMC will establish a joint venture in Japan for advanced image sensors, using advanced process technology to begin mass production in 2029.
On August 11, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation and TSMC announced the signing of a final cooperation agreement to establish a joint venture, Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, in the city of Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The company will utilize advanced process technology to undertake the research and development and manufacturing activities necessary for the mass production of image sensors for smartphones, with mass production slated to begin in 2029. According to the agreement, Sony will be the sole controlling shareholder of the joint venture and plans to operate it as a consolidated subsidiary of the Sony Group, with the representative director of the joint venture to be appointed by Sony. Sony plans to invest approximately 465 billion yen into the joint venture through cash contributions and asset transfers, while TSMC plans to invest approximately 282 billion yen in cash, with the related funds to be invested in phases according to market demand and business conditions.
