Claude announced on August 7, local time, that the programming tool Claude Code will default to automatic mode in the Pro, Max, and Team packages starting August 14. This change aims to support longer autonomous task executions and reduce dangerous operations through automatic safety checks. Previously, users had to manually confirm tool calls, while in automatic mode, a classifier evaluates each tool call in real-time, intercepting actions that could lead to irreversible, destructive, or unauthorized operations. Claude stated that internal tests, third-party safety audits, and actual usage data indicate that automatic mode is safer than traditional manual reviews. The company noted that enterprise teams from Adobe, Nuro, Gusto, and others have already adopted Auto mode in production environments. Claude mentioned that automatic mode will still remain optional in services like Claude Enterprise and Claude API, with plans for gradual promotion to the default setting over the coming months.
